Abstract

A study ofvarious literature reveals that well-held physical education at elementary school can guarantee the growth of physical and moral quality in the child. But in reality the implementa tion ofphysical education at elementary school has been confronted with various problems ranging from inadequate equipment and facilities and limited time allocations and to low-quality teachers. The continuing occurrence ofthese various constraints has caused physical education at elementary school to experience a condition of neglect at levels ranging from a pedagogic one to a philosophical one. Such a reality ofthe neglect ofphysical education as mentioned above represents a crisis entangling various factors in its roots. There fore, any effort to overcome it must be done by means Ofa synergism among and involving various concerned parties in the reconstruction ofphysical education at elementary school. Abstract

The Experience-Based Career Education (EBCE) learning model aimsto relate learning activity to real experience inthe field. This learning model is appropriately applicable on skill subject matter classes with limited facilities, time, students' motivation, andteachers' ability. Classes with such characteristics are commonly found at junior high schools teaching such subject matter as a local content school subject. The EBCE learning model makes use ofthe learning resources available in society. The selected learning resources can be those belonging to anindividual, anorganization, and society. Inthe teach ing activity teachers act as learning coordinators. Thematerials stu dents can learn are those about career-related knowledge and skills in accordance with their interests. The students planthe learning ac tivity in the form ofa project ofwhich the result can be demonstrated in front ofthe class. The EBCElearning model is recommended only as a supple mentary learning model to the existing ones. This model can be applied on other subject matter with similar characteristics. Ifthis model is appropriately implemented, it will enhance students' career understanding, which has become everyone's primary need. Key words: skill, career education, learning model

Abstract

The qualified education has an important role in developing the human resources. The highly strategic role ofthe teacher improve the quality ofeducation is questionable. One ofthe causal factors ofthe gap between the expected and observed quality ofeducation is the low ofquality ofthe teacher. The unexpected, current quality ofthe teacher is commonly believed to be caused by the negligence in respect ofthe strategic cultures values ofthe teacher. According to this condition, the main problem ofthis research is the Javanese culture approach in the elementary educational supervi sion in Special Province ofYogyakarta. This research was aimed at finding out concepts ofJavanese cultural approach implemented by the elementary school principals in educational superVision. The re search used a qualitative-naturalistic approach covering description and analysis ofthe supervisory processes, the opinions and expecta tions ofthe teachers and supervisory, family members, and public figures. The research findings showed thatkaprawiran and kaprayitnan (heroism and cautiousness) values were used in educational supervi sory. In Javanese culture, the principals must always give examples, motivations, and supervision ("ing ngarso sung tulodo, ing madya mangun karso, IUt wuri handayani "). The principals must also be patient, discipline, and implement the "Hasta Bratd' (eight principles ofthe Javanese culture in supervision). Theeducational supervision was expected to use an "achievement oriented without creating distrubances approach" ("kena iwake ora buthek banyune").As the implication of the research findings, the Javanese approach in e1ementaIy educational supervision may be relevant to be used in the other educational super vision and personel development programs and ingovemmentaJ institu tions in Yogyakarta, Central Java, East Java, and other provinces that have values closely related to Javanese culture. Key words: Quality o/teacher, heroism, cautiousness, example, andachievement without distrubances.

Abstract

Educational institutions have the responsibility ofdesigning apro gramto help individuals become society members ofsufficient intelli gence and praiseworthy character. These two criteria make it pos sible to bring about an ideal social life colored with a spirit ofdevel oping the self-potential to achieve prosperity and happiness in the world and in the hereafter. An educational system suitable for the development of a society ofindividuals with such intelligence and character is one which is humanistic in nature, treating the educational participant as an indi vidual as well as a member ofthe community who needs to be helped and encouraged in order to have effective habits based on an inte gration ofknowledge, skills, and will. Such an integration makes it possible for an individual or a community to leave a condition ofde pendence and move to that ofself-dependence and interdependence. Interdependence is extremely important in modern society because a more complex life can only be handled collaboJ;1ltively. Itmeans that skills ofestablishing hannonious relationships are needed and skills of resolving conflicts are among those which should be mastered well though they are not easy to master. In relation to the Indonesian con text, any conflict resolution skill is really important for everybody to have in order to be able to manage various conflicts coming to exist ence in society. Such humanization ofeducation should as soon as possible be the mission ofevery level ofeducational institution in Indonesia in order that basic values for achieving success are really put in the foun dations ofthe character building ofthe nation. Among those values are integrity, modesty, loyalty, courage, fairness, honesty, patience, industriousness, politeness, and consistency. Key words: humanization ofeducation, effective habits, conflict resolution skills.

Abstract

The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is not only a philoso phy but also a methodology, which assists schools or other educational institutions to improve the quality ofstudents' behavior and competen cies. As the methodology deals with curriculum implementation, the teachers should have some alternative techniques ofprocessing class management suitable forteaching and learning activities. Some ofthe techniques are benchmarldng; brainstonning; cause and effect diagrams; "bows and whys" diagrams; forcefield analyses; measurement graphs; Pareto analyses; problem solving techniques; readiness and capability graphs; and statistical methods. Those techniques are not to give the teacher a notion ofworking harder but a notion ofworking smarter. The techniques are deceptively simple but provide a clarity and struc ture incollaborative working and a focus on core pmposes; all enhance working relationships as well as reducing the waste oftime usually ex perienced inmeetings. All ofthese require practice and review inorder to work effectively. Multiple C's are needed for supporting the compe tency: Commitment, Consistency, Conscientiousness, and Confidence. Also educationa11eadership ofevery teacher is absolutely necessary. Withoutthose, CBC will not fully be a success. Key words: curriculum, competencies, process

Abstract

Success ofa tertiary educational institution ofart is not merely measured from the quality ofstudents graduated, but also from the quatity of students absorbed in the work fieds. By absorbed it means not merely to be accommodated, but furthermore to be able to create new work fields. What occurs nowadays, in the contrary, is the decline ofthe quality ofhuman resources which is releted with the quality ofeduca tion art. Tbis is not apart from the responsibility ofthe tertiary educa tion art as the institution which provides the humanreseurces. Seeing this reality the three intact and united points oftripatri as the basic concept ofhuman resources quality increase needs to be examined. First; a conduccive campus is not limited merely to the software such as behavior control, communication system, a clear and aimed cur riculum, clear description ofassignments, etc. Italso includes the struc turing ofthe harware like phycal environment which wi] enable all the elements involved to focus and participate completely in an academic activity. Secondly, the qualified lecturers willing to work hard and to endeavor at all times to increase his kenowledge and also to become conscious ofhis duty in filing and developing his mission tri dhanna. Thirdly, creative students, is the main element in bringging into reality the qualified generation which independently isable the create the taks for himselfin order to be able to gather the maximum benefits. In the and, the ojective oftripatri concepti is to incease the ability ofthe students as the young generation and the nation hope which in the comprehension and the performance not simply act as the man ofanalysis but also as man ofsynthesis in ofart. Abstract

This article is based on a research on the possibility ofimproving the skill ofstudents in the Javanese Art class in performing the tradi tional Javanese singing activity called macapat by using audiocas settes and garnelan (traditional Javanese) musical instruments. The research used the Kemmis and McTaggart model ofaction research. The researcher teaches the class ofJavanese Traditional Singing at the Javanese Language Course Program, Faculty ofLan guages and Arts, State University ofYogyakarta. Thirteen students attending the Javanese Art class ofthe Course Program participated in the research. The researcher collaborated with Kusnadi, M.Pd., who teaches the Javanese Traditional Singing and Music class at the DanceArt Education Course Program ofthe Faculty, and was also a research team member. The research instruments were texts of Javanese songs, observation sheets, questionnaires, tests, audiocas settes, and garnelanmusical instruments. The validity ofinstruments was continued by means ofsemantic validation, the technique ofcheck and recheck, discussions with colleagues and the collaborator, and experts' judgment. The research was conducted in four cycles. The results of the research indicate that audiocassettes and garnelan musical instruments can improve the students' skill in per fonning the macapat singing activity. In improving that skill by using audiocassettes (I) students can conduct independent learning and (2) beginners can master the sense ofJavanese musical tone by imitation and playback, sharpened by listening to audiocassettes ofJavanese songs. By the end ofcycle three their mastery of that sense had begun to show some state ofbeing established. To establish it more finnly, it was necessary to conduct cycle four by utilizing the garnelan musical instruments, which clearly show some tone stability, in learn ing how to sing Javanese songs. With the use ofthe garnelan musical instruments (I) students learned to master their sensitivity ofthe tones (called slendro and pelog) by feeling them, (2) the tones they learned to sense were presented in an integrated way by means ofthe garnelan rhythm, (3) Javanese songs with a metrical scale were more easily mastered by students than those with a rhythmical one, (4) errors often occurred at the tone jumps called kempyung and gembyang, and (5) nearing the end ofthe research their mastery ofthe sense of tone more was better and more well-established. Students began to be able to learn Javanese songs by themselves .. Keywords: Javanese song, audiomedia, garnelan, sense ofngeng

Abstract

Just like adults, children, too, need various information ofthe world, ofall the things present and happening in their surroundings. To support the growth oftheir self-identity and personality, efforts should be madeto fulfil that need. Providing them with what is right fully theirs is the duty ofadults and at the same time a form oftheir appreciation ofchildren. Storytelling is one way to provide them with the information they need. Everyone likes and has.a need ofstories. Stories present and make dialogues about life in appealing and concrete ways. Through stories told, children gain the various infonnation they will need in their life. The stories intended for children's consumption can be taken from and given through children's point of view as the focus ofnarration. It is believed that children's literature contributes greatly to the development ofchildren's personality in the process ofcoming to adulthood as persons possessing clear self-identity. It is believed that literature can be a means ofimplanting, fostering, developing, and preserving values considered good and worthy by the family, society, and nation. The implantation ofvalues can be done right from the time children are still unable to speak and write will. The contribution ofchildren's literature to children's personality develop ment can be roughly differentiated into that concerning personal values and that concerning educational values, the former related to emotional and intellectual development, the development ofthe imagination, and that ofthe social, ethical, and religious senses and the latter related to the desire for exploration and discovery, to language development, to the development ofesthetic values, to multicultural insights, and to the implantation ofthe reading habit. Key words: children's literature, personality development, personal values, educational values
